(3:20) “Hiring is very similar to dating. A lot of times what you see on the first date is not what you get 3 months, 6 months, a year later. The very same goes with the hiring process. Which means that, when you are thinking about going through the hiring process and building a winning team for yourself, go into the mindset understanding you will probably go through 3 or even 4 people before you find the ‘one’. “

 

(7:15) “When you are assigning the task to the individuals that work for you, that are being brought on to help you in any area of the business, be very clear and specific about exactly how much time you want allocated to those tasks. Be very very clear.”

 

(11:37) “Mindset is the number one thing. I always say it: mindset comes before mechanics. You can send someone off firing and doing tactical tasks, from day one hour one. But if they don’t understand the connection to the result they are trying to get, you are not going to be happy with their performance.”

Sometimes work can feel like a hamster wheel. We go round and round just working to get to retirement without even thinking about the future. This is why earning passive income is so attractive to many people. Specifically, through real estate.

 

In today's episode, we are talking to entrepreneur and expert real estate investor Lane Kawaoka. He is the co-owner of MPFE Investments and host of the real estate podcast Simple Passive Cash Flow Fund.

 

With over 260+ multi family units, he understands how beneficial real estate investing can be for continuous income. Lane explains that while many people are scared of the market because of the 2008 crash, it’s a different market that he recommends investing in.

We hear of career changes all the time. Ellen Degeneres was a paralegal before she was a daytime talk show host. Julia Child was a spy for the CIA before she became a culinary genius.

 

We all have our reasons to leave one profession for another. Our guest Annie Spano’s reason to leave was a more personal reason. Annie hopped from job to job, moving from high school math teacher to a project coordinator in a big corporate business.

 

However, as she started to grow in the position and in her education, she started recognizing a ‘work bully’ situation in the office.

 

She then left and created ‘Style Collective’, a community to collaborate and empower other women to grow their fashion blogs. Annie connects with people through sharing this story, a story of learning from a personal hardship and growing from the experience.

We talk on this show all the time about creating the foundation for a winning team. Today, I want to pull back the curtain and take you back to before some of my own employees were a part of my team… to when they were interns!

 

Some of my best full time hires have come from internships. Having an internship program in your business is so important because you can:

 

  1. Pre-evaluate your hires and  
  2. Do so in an affordable way where you can remove some of the tactical work for your plate while helping your interns gain invaluable career and business experience

 

When you are growing in any organization, people are everything. Those who wait too long to hire are the ones that struggle immensely building their business and becoming a leader.

 

(3:15) “Bottom line here is there is no better way to find amazing employees that learn fast, pick up at rocket speed, are energetic, excited and are going to give a boost to your small business than through bringing on interns.”

 

(6:47) “It’s to their benefit here because you can teach them unbelievable skills that they will use to earn a higher paying job upon graduation and to get better opportunities for themselves when they complete their education.”

 

(12:40) “ It’s incredibly important to take great care of your interns, make it an amazing learning experience for them. Make it fun, make it valuable. Meet with them in person, take time to mentor them. Make it a relationship so that when that internship ends, you have someone out there who is an ambassador and an advocate for your company.”

“Sometimes the simplest solution is often the best one”

 

I said it once and I’ll say it again, simplicity is KEY. This year I found myself trapped using a complicated approach to sales and success then necessary. So I railed it back, and implemented a strategy I haven't used in a while-- 30 minute strategy sessions. It’s simple, straightforward, and the easiest way to get prospects on your calendar

 

Sometimes we get so caught up in the business and the work, that we forget what's right in front of us. For us that was the strategy sessions. We were so focused on trying to find other ways to utilize OTHER strategies, we left this one behind.

 

Sometimes we need to go back to the basics, rework some things, and try it in a new way. Strategy sessions are just one of the many ways you can get quality leads on your calendar ready to buy---listen to the rest of the episode for more!

 

(1:03) “Sometimes you put so much time and energy into audimation and level 2 and level 3 strategies that you are trying to employ but you forget about the simple solutions right in front of your face”

“Your life can change in an instant”

 

Tony Robbins said this over and over again for the past 15 years. In all honesty, I didn’t understand it the first few times.

 

The key heartbeat in your business is the ability to implement strong strategies, put in the work and be mentally present… which means you’ve got to be operating at your peak. This year, I hired a personal trainer to get back into shape and improve my health. In that instant, I’ve changed my life (more on that in the episode).

 

Have YOU invested in your own health and wellness? The energy required to grow a business means you’ve got to take care of yourself FIRST. Find the means to build up your energy so you can be fully present for yourself, your business, and your family.



(3:49) “My fatigue was so bad during the day I didn’t even want to get out of bed. I was so exhausted. I was dragging my way through appointment after appointment, struggling my way call after call. I really wasn't happy or present in anything I was doing because I was so tired.”

 

(7:18) “We all know our ability to build our wealth is directly tied to our energy level and our energy level is essentially going to determine our ability to achieve all our goals and dreams because you can know the right things to do but without the drive and the spark and the energy to do them...that knowledge doesn't do you any good.”

 

(9:15) “The energy I have now working with the trainer, to raise my energy level, my strength, my endurance is priceless. I don't wake up in the morning feeling fatigued anymore. I can hope out of the bed at 6am and BOOM ready to go.”

2018 is basically here, which means we need to get hyper focused-- meeting revenue goals, getting courses and coaches to fill in the gaps, and editing personal schedules to become MORE productive.

 

Personal productivity is the one thing that stands in the way of entrepreneurs reaching their financial goals. Days become over-complicated with a list of objectives that are just simply unproductive.

 

The question we need ask ourselves when we look at the calendar is: does this directly add to the lifestyle I'm trying to create and the income I'm trying to achieve?



(3:44) “What is going to be the top big rocks, that are core recurring things on your calendar, every single week. That are tangibility and effectively moving you toward your goal. In a way you can visually see there is a direct correlation in time in and results out.”

 

(7:26) “The best thing you can do for yourself at this point this time of year is simplify, go back through, do some weeding. Try to challenge yourself to get rid of a third of the projects and initiatives and tasks you are doing each week. Get the right person doing the right things”

 

(13:28) “I want in encourage each and everyone of you, that if you have been feeling overwhelmed, if you have been feeling like your energy is being dispersed or diluted and you have too much on your plate--it's because there is!”

There is a depiction online of what everyone thinks the “journey to success” looks like versus reality. What most of the depictions don’t show, however, is that success is never a straight line.



Entrepreneurship (and being successful at it) is full of messes -- and you have to be willing to accept that failures along the way will happen. The stronger you become in accepting them and rolling with the punches, the faster you will grow your business.



In the moment, it feels so hard to push through and adapt. But remember this: it takes 10,000 hours to master any skill. When you’re in business, you’re learning, growing, and developing new skills every single day. Your ability to PIVOT in the face of struggle gives you the ability to problem solve quickly and effectively.



(2:30) “You are now presented with a choice: to accept where you are as final, or PIVOT. Pivoting will take you all the way to the top. Pivoting is one of the most important and hardest entrepreneurial skills”

 

(6:20) “The vast majority of people are willing to accept a temporary setback, as a final destination. But you, you my UNSTOPPABLE ARMY, are absolutely not. You are going to pivot your way to success.”

 

(9:10) “The journey is not clean... it is not pretty for any of us. But always remember that the obstacles you are facing were put in your path to grow you into the highest and best form of yourself you can be.”

When life gives you chocolate chips, why not make cookies? That is exactly what CEO and cancer survivor Loren Brill did. At the age of just 22, Loren was diagnosed with cancer, which turned her world upside down.

 

Loren shares that there are somethings you just can't control, but there are things you can. Getting diagnosed with cancer was something no one could see coming, but her health and nutrition was an escape. She wanted life and empowerment out of what she put into her body.

When it comes to growing your business, the opinions and criticism of others can seemingly be everywhere. It's important to know which feedback should be taken seriously in each specific situation and setting.

 

Someone who is not in the entrepreneurial world will never understand the specific challenges and triumphs of being a business owner. Bottom line: unless the source of feedback has already done what you want to achieve, DON'T TAKE ADVICE FROM THEM!



(2:23) “It’s very important to recognize and realize that someone that is not in the entrepreneurial world will never understand the feeling that the person has deep down within them that they must pursue something bigger than themselves”

 

(7:10) “It’s all going to come down to leadership. It’s your ability first and foremost to lead yourself. To own your decisions, to not need to fall back on the opinions of other people.To reach up, not down. To look up and not down.”

We are inspired, blown away and in awe of our guest we have on the show today: Gerard Adams, co-founder of elite daily and now CEO of FOWNDERS. Gerard became a multi-millionaire before he was 25 before he lost it all.

 

The solution he found to earn it all back? A one stop shop for millennials to find news about the things they’re actually interested in.

 

With that, Elite Daily was born. Within 4 years Gerard and his team grew the site to one of the biggest online platforms for news. After Gerard’s exit from the company, he realized his entrepreneurial spirit was still very much alive.

 

Gerard then created FOWNDERS, out of Newark, New Jersey, to help entrepreneurs become better leaders and to rise up in their industries. He says leaders create more leaders not followers. He set new goals on helping entrepreneur become leaders and rise up in their own industry.

Close your eyes for a minute and travel back in time 10 years ago. When getting a college education meant you could either do one or two things like accounting, teaching, or science. Today's graduates have it a little different. New industries are being created and the line between boss and company is not so clear. So what happens now?

 

Claim a position and make it into something, so you can become the entrepreneur in your family! Become the key leader in your family to set the tone and change the direction. Standing still is not longer viable. Are you ready to change course for your family?

Meet Dustin Mathews, master speaker, trainer and author. He is a speaking entrepreneur who helps others sell their products and services with webinars, online media, speeches and seminars. He is breaking down the key elements to any presentation and the structure. For example, the intro, the background story, the body and the two most important; your action step and conclusion.

 

These two parts within the structure is what is going to get people to buy your product or service. Think about this….

 

Typically, we start from beginning to end when designing a presentation. Dustin challenges you to start from end to beginning. What action do you want your audience to take? Do you want to buy something, or opt into your list or schedule an appointment? Whatever it is, you make the whole presentation lead into the that action steps.

 

Don’t just do it once, do it throughout. Tell your audience about the success stories or what could happen if you were to take this action. Don’t hesitate to share, but add value and make it feel natural.

 

Get in the mindset of thinking everything as a presentation. Everything is chance to sell and build up the excitement to your product. Don’t ever hold back, because at the end of the day YOU are going to sell your business!

Today’s episode is going to be different. No script. No notes. Just me... and you, talking heart to heart about a message that we need to hear to remind ourselves of the bigger plan.

 

As we build and grow our businesses and we work so hard to create the life we want for our family, we see there are a lot of ups and downs. More chaos and craziness when it comes to entrepreneurship than anything else. There are so many things that are out of our control.

 

We go to school, we take the test and get the grade.In the professional world, we get up, we go to work, we put in the hours, we do more work and usually come out doing pretty well. In entrepreneurship, we don’t always get to just do ‘the work’. Sometimes it just isn’t enough. It’s about doing the right work at the right time.

 

We need to let go of the reigns. Have faith and surrender yourself to the bigger plan. Know that, whatever happens it not an end to one thing but the beginning of something better.

 

One of the easiest ways to stay at peace with the bigger plan is to make sure you’re following a business growth SYSTEM, versus a mix of disjointed pieces that don’t work together.

It’s time to reevaluate your business! It’s time to talk about the one word that no one is talking about online--SUSTAINABILITY!



Without systems and sustainable processes, you will be working everyday, every hour for the rest of your life. It’s not about the right choice for now but the right choice for 10 years down the road. You need to have an investor mentality!

 

A solid team is the best investment you can make. Yes, there are shortcuts and cheaper options but what will that look like down the road? Know your value system. Think to yourself :

 

What am I going to do today, to ensure my day to day looks like my dream life?

 

Alway keep that in the back of your head. Make those plans now, to prepare you for a life ahead of time. It makes your dreams possible even faster. So, making sure you have a team will ensure that you don’t crash and burn. You don’t have to hustle and burn out until you fall. Create a team, build a system and create good business practices to ensure that you or your business don’t fail.

FREEZE. HOLD ON. DON’T MOVE.

 

It might be the hardest and simultaneously the simplest things to do: focus on one thing. It’s time to take back your life, and start taking care of YOU.

 

In this episode we are talking to Life and Wellness Coach, Yoga Instructor and Podcaster Angela Wagner, who has built a business on helping people get centered and focused on their businesses.

 

One of the exercise Angela swears by (and talks about in our interview) to re-focus your brain is to light a candle, grab a notebook, and then a pen. Set the timer for 5 minutes. Then, stare into the flame and focus on just that flame. Don’t let anything else come into your mind. Once you think of something other than the flame, make a mark in your notebook. Once you do this exercise more and more, the less marks you will have.

 

It’s all about retraining your brain to focus on something that isn’t work or social media but to just turn your brain off for 5 minutes and relax. Don’t live life attached to your business or your phone, but spend it on the things that make you happy. Put yourself into neutral and give yourself a break. Your brain, body and family will be happy you did. :)

Ok guys... we need to talk. We need to talk about some things I’ve seen on social media recently. So many accounts have been going on and on about how if you don’t work 24/7 you aren’t working hard enough. If you don’t document your every move, did it really happen?

 

This is the furthest from the truth! This mindset is all wrong. If you put business first, and worry about capturing the moments then what MEMORIES do you have? Working every single moment of every single day means that you will fall short in some part of your life--like your family or health.

 

Instead of working every moment build a business based on systems, build a strong independent team, and make money while adding value to your company/business. It’s time to get in this mindset and create ‘tunnel vision’ on reaching your goals!

 

It’s time to unfollow all those people, who yes may be successful in business but unsuccessful in other areas. Don’t let them hold you back and think that only way to be successful is to work, work, and work more. TAKE ACTION on your dreams and don’t let your family or yourself take a back seat.

Get excited! The business you are doing now is the business you will be doing in January. It’s hard to see it now, but you have to push through! Just take a deep breath, because the results you get today (or what you got over the summer) does not reflect your future income.

 

The people who take action are the ones who always win. So stop overthinking. Stop beating yourself up because success is coming. The buyiny busy season is here! So it’s time to refill your cup, get back on the horse and set the stage for 2018!

 

Remember, that overnight success was 15 years in the making. You are on your way to success! Invest in your success and get ready for the ‘new year’.
