For years, people have been saying content is king. And while content is important, what happens when you create a ton of content but don’t make sales from it?

 

Times are changing and we need to start thinking about content in a different way. In this episode we are talking to Ross Simmonds, serial entrepreneur, about how important it is to not only create the content but also the distribution low-down.

 

In this day and age, creating content has become the norm. We know what when we have a business or a blog that the most important thing is to create content the correlates with our business. However what people forget to realize is after you create it, you need to DISTRIBUTE it. You need to find the platforms, connect with the people in your audience and get your content out there!

 

Daily interaction is key to getting content to your audience in an organic way. Ross explains that commenting, liking, and reposting content in the same niche will help build that relationship. It’s all about the one-on-one interactions. Gathering a big following  takes time (like anything in business). It takes a lot of little interactions NOT just one day of liking some photos.

 

It’s not always about creating something, it’s about creating and BUILDING. Once you put in the time, life will reward you with success!

When you think about a person who has clarity, drive, success, and motivation-- who do you think of?

 

Are they the CEO of a large company, a big time podcast star, or a celebrity in their niche? Either way, they are probably KILLING the game when it comes to business. They are making big moves that are all in line with their big goal.

 

So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to make that YOURSELF that person. When we think about how to get our business to really take off, there are so many things we could go over. Today we are going to focus on just one part of the puzzle: your calendar!

 

That’s right, it’s time to take something so simple as calendar blocking and use it to your advantage in business. It’s all about the time audit today, and by creating 10 core blocks in your week your calendar will start to work for you, not against you.

 

When it comes to how to break up these 10 blocks here are some things to think about:

  • Reflect on your vision board. Look to see what those 10 blocks should be based on what your big goals are. All these goals and dreams will be on your vision board so use it as a reference to creating these recurring blocks
  • Make 7-10 of these blocks correlate with putting money directly in your pocket. This will allow your business to continue to go and move forward. These little goals will help achieve your big goal
  • Determine how many hours and how often do you need to do these blocks in order to get your goals accomplished. You need to find the perfect mix of both but also don’t overwork yourself. Find the right amount of hours that work for you and your dreams

 

Remember that you can take charge of the hours you want to work. If you don’t want to work of Friday’s, then stick to your time blocks and work the extra hours Monday-Thursday so you are set for the weekend. You just need to focus on what you want, and watch your business and your calendar expand.

 

At the end of the day, where your time goes your energy will flow. Have the discipline to focus on your calendar blocks and become...Unstoppable!

Are you not getting the results you want from your content strategy?

 

When thinking about your content and your business, you need to be thinking about three things; frequency, consistency, and aggressiveness.  

 

Besides the obvious differences with corporate and small businesses, larger companies with larger teams have the ability to do a lot with the content they have. That isn't the case with small businesses.

 

So if you *are* a small business owner, know this: it’s time to stop worrying about the AMOUNT of content and focus in on the QUALITY of the content.

 

When you focus on too much as a small business owner, the projects can get lost. So focus on just a few things, and do them to perfection.

 

Take a look at the content you’re planning to push out this week. Is it:

  • Going out when your audience is online to consume it, or are you using the “post and pray” method?
  • Have you stuck to a consistent schedule so that your audience knows when to expect to see you online?
  • Are you repurposing, resharing, etc. enough to tackle today’s short attention span?

It’s time to get your brave on! Throw away that nasty four letter word FEAR and take life by the horns.

 

Speech Stylist and Professional Speaker Chantelle knew that she was destined to be a performer. When people hear a speech, they tend to remember to the story rather than the facts. It’s all about making impact and spreading the word of courage. Chantelle understood the power of words and how speaking to an audience.

 

She explains these SIMPLE ways that you can get more speaking engagements and build your story not only with the audience but with the host of the event:

 

  • It’s all about the research. If you don’t do your homework, you are going to walk in blind. Use this time to filter what type of event you want to go to, who is going to attend and even how far away it is. Use this time to get all the facts BEFORE you make the trip.
  • Build your relationship with the host. This is a networking opportunity so connect with the people who are there. It’s always about the long game when it comes to entrepreneurship. Stay awhile after the event, get there early and help set up, or ask how you can promote their book; do something for them!
  • Make the appearance about them! This day all isn't about you, show the host that you want to help promote, sell a program or help sell their book. There are so many ways you can make the event about them out!

 

Speech is a powerful thing. It can change minds and reach so many people. However, without the right approach and cultivated relationship, you might have a hard time even getting your foot in the door. So tell your story and watch FEAR fall away.

We look at numbers everyday. We dial them on our phones, we check them to make sure we are going the right speed, and we use them to splurge a little here and there (wink wink). But we need to start looking at them differently.

 

In this episode we are talking about numbers that REALLY matter when it comes to online marketing. Let’s be honest, there are numbers flying all over the place. You need to know how to understand the results you get. Good business practices are not always measured in dollars and cents. There are 4 areas you need to focus on when trying to understand your numbers.

 

  • Build a list! In the online world your list is everything. The people on it are your potential buyers. Building your list every month will create the growth in your business
  • Look at how much revenue you make based on your email community. This number can change but the math is still the same. Once you figure you out how many people you need add a month, you can set REAL goals to see growth.
  • How many leads do you need to gain in order to get a new customer? You need to be thinking about this so you can start making the connection between a lead and a new client
  • Understanding what the lifetime value of your customer! See what a current customer is valued at. Once you know how much to spend on a current client then you will get a better idea for future clients.

 

Looking at the numbers is something every business owner needs to do. It’s time to stop running the business with your emotions and running the game with NUMBERS. Now you may need to listen to this episode more than once and take some notes, but that's ok! Like I said before we see numbers all the time, so it’s time to pay attention to numbers that REALLY matter!

We all have a WHY story behind our dive into entrepreneurship. So what made Emmy Award winning, former NBC anchor Darieth Chisolm change her entire career path in favor of starting her own business?

 

It might be something you relate to: wanting to be fully present in her son’s life and be the role model and self-starter that she wanted to be for him.

 

It’s no surprise that making such a big change -- especially as a person in the public eye -- can be nerve wracking. Today, Darieth shares her secret sauce to making the change, balancing family and business, and finding fulfillment after what some might consider the “dream” career.

 

Darieth’s biggest advice in making the decision to become an entrepreneur:

  • Keep relationships at the top of your list. Relationships keep the world spinning so never stop making them.
  • Utilize workshops or retreats. They make the perfect place to re-share content and on a personal level.
  • Time management! Know your limits when it comes to scheduling. Block things out so you know what you have to do that day and execut.

 

If there’s one thing to take away from today’s episode, it’s this: when your WHY shows up in a big way, follow it smartly and strategically… it will never steer you wrong.

There is no ‘i’ in team. It's the same in sports as it is in business. When you trust and know the team that is standing on the field with you, nothing can go wrong.

 

In business, we call this building your infrastructure. Building the foundation to get your business to the sky. It’s about creating a business that will be remembered for generations. In order to do that, we need to be thinking about the next step NOT the next five steps. Think about your business from day one of what you want to accomplish, set a goal. Then build the foundation for that dream.

 

When laying down the foundation you need to be thinking about a few things:

  • You always need to have traffic and leads coming into your business. Without your leads, there is no new income. You need these leads in order to grow and expand your business.
  • List building, list building, and list building. Once you capture your leads, you need to nurture them. People buy based on how much content they consume, so stay on their mind!

...And most importantly!

  • TEAM! TEAM! TEAM! You are not going to be able to be great at everything in your business. Find people who you trust, complement you and allow you to go international!

 

These are the things you need in order to build your business up. In order to have a solid and successful business, you need to build a strong foundation. Don’t let money be an excuse not to hire people. Embrace the team building experience and watch your business sore!

It’s all about the ‘gram! Social media has longevity and some platforms last longer than others. We see it all the time with the ups and downs of Twitter, Vine, and Facebook. The next big social platform on the rise? INSTAGRAM!

 

Instagram is growing and we are seeing almost everyone turn to it for not only personal but also business. In this episode we are talking Intagram expert, Jasmine Star! She is law school dropout who followed her dreams to start her own photography business. Over the years, she has also mastered the world of Instagram.

 

Jasmine knows from experience, that getting it right the first time will almost never happen. It takes time on figuring out what your audience likes. Try, try, and try again and figure out what works for you. Once you figure this out, you will “go viral”! Getting the perfect photo with the right caption will give your Instagram the attention it deserves.

 

When starting your Instagram, remember that  it takes time and a bit of organization. Get that down, and your process will be much easier. Other considerations:

 

  • Plan your week in advance! Look to see what you have in store for the week ahead and plan your posts based on what you are doing. There is value in planning out your content ahead of time.
  • Create content that sparks interest. Share how-to’s, guides, or training anything that is shareable content. When you create content that can be shared, it makes it easier for people to share and spread the word about your business
  • Add hashtags to your photos. Hashtags is one of the only things that people can search on Instagram, so add them to all your photos. Make sure they are relevant to your picture and get them in front of your profile!

 

Make Instagram part of your daily routine. Add it to all the other social media you have going on and watch it take off. If you show up, people will care about what you are putting out there. There are millions of people on Instagram, get them engaged in what you are putting out there! Love yourself, love your Instagram.

“Distraction is the ultimate dream killer”

 

Think back to what you did today. Was part of that day spent looking at a screen?

 

I think most of us would answer a big YES. We are all guilty of it. We look at screens for so many things; business, checking emails, looking at family pictures on Facebook... but how productive are we when we look at the bright screen?

 

If we are always looking down it can be hard to appreciate the things we have right in front of you. Let yourself slow down enough to think clearly and see the bigger picture. See your life and business from a fresh set of eyes and solve the problems in front of you instead of making new ones.

 

It's time to take your life back!

 

I have a challenge for you this week: Take time and go to the park, go to a coffee shop or look out onto the water. Find a place that is technology-free and do some work there. Bring a notebook and pen (yes, I said it a notebook and pen) and do business without technology getting in the way. You can be more productive when you become one with nature and allow your brain to solve problems without a screen in the way.

“Entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint”

 

...it’s something your hear on this show all of the time. Success doesn’t just happen overnight.

 

Take it from Joel Holland, CEO and founder of Video Blocks. He experienced some challenges to getting to the top but made the changes he needed to stay there! He shares his story and wisdom -- and why having a business should be rewarding, not pulling the life out of you.

 

Joel made these tweaks to his business and saw a change not only in his business growth, but also his life:

 

  • Watch out for burn out! Don’t work yourself to death, prioritize the tasks you need to get done. Somethings don’t have to get done right away, just remember there is always tomorrow!
  • Get out of the office. Sometimes you just need to GET OUT! Make time for yourself, take a vacation or spend the day with your family. If you hire the right staff, they will be fine on their own.
  • Have faith in the people you hire! If you hire the right people, they will exceed all expectations. You also need to make sure you hire at the right time. Don’t wait until you are overwhelmed, anticipate the growth and hire before.

 

When you become an entrepreneur it can be hard to take a break. There is this culture that when you always have to working and doing something. MAKE THE CHANGE! You need to make time for yourself, take time out of your day to spend on you! When you enjoy what you do, work doesn’t seem like work!

Bree’s passion has given her the dream job… giving a voice to female musicians. Letting them showcase their talents and broadcasting it to the world. One of the key ways she made it happen is, Bree built a relationship with her list, and she did so by doing a few things:

 

  • Always keep building the relationship you have with people. Once you get a person on your list, stay connected with them through email, newsletters, social media, etc.
  • Interact with your fans in different ways. There are numerous ways to stay connected with your fans, one of them is through fan pages. It can help you build a community that is engaged, excited, and bought into your mission.
  • Use different tools to your advantage! Use Facebook LIVE or podcasting, use different tools. When you have multiple outlets, you can reach more people.

 

Building relationships with your audience is KEY in any business, but you deserve to make it fun. When you build an audience in your ‘dream field,’ it puts the focus on the CONNECTION, not just adding a name to a list.

 

Start with your passion and work from there. When you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work anymore.

What does your DREAM life look like? Is there a nice car or a big house? Maybe your dream is to head to the beach every summer, or take 5 vacations a year! It really does sound like a dream, doesn’t it?!

 

Sometimes these dreams are so far out of reach that we have a hard time seeing them. It can also get harder if we don’t feel the support from the people we love. We change as we grow as entrepreneurs, which can be scary for our spouse and loved ones at times. The best way to grow as a family, is to set family GOALS.

 

In this episode we are talking about how setting goals as a family opens the door to amazing opportunities for you, your loved ones and your business.

 

  • When we set these goals we are changing the business from a solo project to something that can be done together. Show your family the exciting opportunities that can happen when you work together
  • You will become more united as a couple and family. When you surround yourself with people who believe in you and support you, great things will happen!
  • Clearly defining what your goals are as a family will give you a better perspective on how to get there! When everyone is on the same page, it will make the journey enjoyable and easier.

 

Sometimes we need to put ourselves in others' shoes and see it from their perspective. Show them what is in it for them! Show them all the amazing things that can happen when you work together. When you clearly define the goals you want to accomplish, everyone will be on the same page and know what to work for. It’s all about unity and you are more powerful together than you are apart!

Imagine your perfect business. You’re probably thinking, “I just need THIS” or “If I only had THAT” -- but the reality is, you have every tool you need inside of you! Meet Nicole Casanova, CEO/Founder of  Living Polished and expert on her ‘internal approach’ to success.

 

Most of the ‘tools’ out there are things like personality tests, or things to help you change your outside views to also change on the inside. What if we did things the opposite way… from the inside out?

 

Reconnecting with your body should happen daily! Each day you can implement these two things to get that connection:

  • You need to feel what you want to happen. Spend some time in the morning and visualize the sensations you want. When you can feel the joy and the excitement, it will translate into the real world.
  • Channel out all the bad to make room for the good. When something bad happens all you think about is that bad moment, try and find the good. Feel the good parts and let emotion take over you body, not the bad one.

 

You can discover positivity in any situation, you just have to believe it is there. When you feel good about yourself, it will translate into your business. A business/company can’t be successful unless the person behind it knows it will be. Everything starts with getting a healthy mindset ready to create and conquer!

If you were to ask, ‘what is the most important thing when it comes to managing a profitable business?’ the answer would probably be different depending on who you asked.

 

But if there is one thing everyone can agree on...it’s to know your customer! Knowing exactly who you are targeting will dictate what content you produce, what platforms you are on, and what strategies you implement.

 

In this episode, we are talking to social media marketer and CEO of Bad Rhino Inc., Marty McDonald. He knows that without the ‘ideal customer’ part of the equation, the other parts have a harder time coming together. He also shares other tools to have in order to have best results:

 

  • Be CONSISTENT! You need to post regularly and make sure the posts are all somehow connected. They need to have the same call to action, or it’s going to get lost in all the other work you do.
  • Keep your eyes open to your audience. When you listen to your audience you can create the content that they need and something they can actually USE. Take in the feedback so you can continue to grow.
  • Have a strategy. Create something that is universal and can work among all platforms. Your strategy is interconnected to all platforms, so spend some time and get a clear vision on what direction you want to take.

 

When you mix these tools and know your audience, your social strategy will be nothing short of amazing! Marty stresses that with all these new platforms popping up everywhere, it can be hard to stay focused. Keep your eyes on the prize. Don’t jump from one platform to another and forget where you just were. You have to be in just enough places to make an impact.

Lights, Camera, ACTION! We all would kill to have that exposure on national television. It would be life changing, right?! So we brought in an expert.

 

Meet Christina Nicholson, former TV and news reporter turned entrepreneur. She helps small business owners land features on national television. Television is great exposure, but if you don’t position yourself the right way things could get difficult to maintain. You always have to be thinking, how can I help their audience? What problem do I solve, or how can I help? If you insert yourself into the conversation, it makes pitching that much easier.

 

Cristina has been on both sides and knows what to look for when people start to pitch their service or product:

  • Know what your end goal is. Your reason to get on television should not just be for media expose, but for something bigger. Know what the audience wants and then cater to that need.
  • Think about what you are going to pitch. Getting free media is worth so much more than getting an advertisement, so think carefully about how you want to frame your message.
  • Sometimes it’s quality over quantity. When you personalize the message it can give you a leg up in your pitch. It shows them that your carefully crafted your message and didn’t send the same thing to 100 other people.

 

Christina’s best tip? When you are pitching a big media appearance, it helps to be yourself. Don’t change to fit someone else’s idea. Go in with no regrets and show them who YOU are as a business owner.

So many people think they have to choose between family and work. We sometimes look at the two as separate spaces. Why do we have to choose? Well, guess what... you DON’T HAVE TO!

 

In this episode we are talking to author, mom, entrepreneur, and podcaster Dana Malstaff. She shares her story how she didn’t choose between family or work, instead finding ways to mix the two. By merging the two worlds, it will show your children how to create and innovate and what is possible when you work hard.

 

When you integrate the kids into your work space, it builds the level of fulfillment in your life. There are so many way you can build your kids into your work:

  • Create the 10 minute rule with your kids. Do things in 10 minute increments so you can pace yourself. This allows you to break up your day and make time for EVERYTHING.
  • Eliminate the things that frustrate you. Get out a pen and paper and let your kids work with you. This allows them to work with you and feel like a part of your work.
  • Everyone has homework, so why not do it together? When they come home from school, sit down at the table and work together.

 

It’s important to show our kids there is something outside of their own personal world. To show them examples of how mom and dad work and create, and inspiring them to do the same. Allowing them to work with you will give you time with your kids and also be able to live your dream as an entrepreneur. You can have it all. Don’t let the dream of having a family and a business go to waste!
